Jerry and Sue McLain at the Hubbard Glacier

When the weight of the ice becomes too great, the glacier breaks loose from the ground and begins to move like a river down to the sea.  Because it contains no air, the most ancient ice is the darkest blue in color.  Other colors are from rocks and debris picked up by the glacier.

Right:  At the sea, the Hubbard Glacier is an active wall of ice 300 feet high and six miles wide.
