      When the glacier meets the warmer coastal air and sea water, it begins to degrade, and chunks of ice or icebergs are "calved." 
     As the ship approached the glacier, we heard cracks like distant thunder.  It was the sound of ice breaking off.  First you would see the ice falling into the sea; then a few seconds later you would hear the crash.
