      Glaciers begin as snowfall in the high mountain ranges.  Because the snow doesn't melt and flow away, it accumulates and eventually, pressed by the increasing mass of snow above it, turns to solid ice.

Left:  The female glacier on the left fades into the male glacier on the right.  The ice floes in the water have recently broken off the male glacier.
