Jerry and Sue McLain at Anchorage

The ambivalence of westerners toward the magpie is legendary.  The bird has a reputation for tattling and stealing.  Searching for insects, it pecks wounds in the backs of livestock, sometimes causing fatal infections.  Gregarious and handsome, however, this relative of the crow and the jay, if captured young enough, can be taught to speak.
