Jerry and Sue McLain at Fairbanks

After lunch we embarked on the riverboat Discovery III, a sternwheeler with four decks, for a three-and-a-half hour riverboat cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers.  During the first half of the twentieth century, most freight was carried to the Klondike by boat.  Later the riverboats were replaced by trains and airplanes, but remain a romantic part of Alaska's history.

Right: Smaller than the Discovery III, the Discovery II passed us on its way up the Chena River.
