     Wet, dirty, and granular describes the surface of the glacier in August, and even if it isn't raining, the ice is too slippery for walking, even if you are shod in special rubber glacier boots. 
     A crevasse, five or six feet wide and very deep, is just left of the picture area and downhill.  The surface of the glacier is so slick that if someone started to slide, he could go right into the hole.
