Jerry and Sue McLain at Fairbanks

Although the Chena River flows into the Tanana, the Tanana is higher and holds the Chena back.  The darker water in the distance is the Chena River.  A fact gleaned from the Riverboat Discovery Gazette is "The Tanana River is the largest glacier-fed stream in the world."  The gray color of the water is caused by glacial silt created when glacial movement crushes the rocks.

Right: Nuchalawoya, the Athabascan name for "Wedding of the Rivers," at the confluence of the Chena and Tanana.
