Although the Chena River flows into the Tanana, the Tanana is higher and holds the Chena back. The darker water in the distance is the Chena River. A fact gleaned from the Riverboat Discovery Gazette is "The Tanana River is the largest glacier-fed stream in the world." The gray color of the water is caused by glacial silt created when glacial movement crushes the rocks.
Right: Nuchalawoya, the Athabascan name for "Wedding of the Rivers," at the confluence of the Chena and Tanana. |
