Jerry and Sue McLain at Fairbanks

Right: Tourists watch the water carrying pay dirt flowing through the sluice.
Inset:  The waterfall carrying water from the dam to the sluice.
Expert miners would pan the dirt washing through the sluice and pick up the nuggets that were left after the lighter soil and stones had been washed away.

According to Yukon Yonda and her husband Dexter the miners would dig gold ore down in the mine all winter. Then in the summer, they would pan the pay dirt to get the gold.  Tourists were invited to pan a bag of pay dirt . Between us, Jerry and I found a few specks of gold dust and a very small nugget that rattled when we shook the film case sit was stored in.
